Body Mass Index (BMI) is a handy number which gives a rough estimate of the amount of body fat in people. BMI calculator takes the person’s height and weight, which correlates to body fat percentages.

BMI is the primary measure to see if one is obese or qualified to undergo weight loss surgery, but not the only measure. Patients are more likely to be qualified patients if they comorbidities including hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.

Is BMI Reliable Indicator?

There is a strong correlation between BMI and body fat percentage, but it is still an estimate. Because men typically have more muscles than women, BMI tends to overstate body fat for men, and underestimates body fat for women. Because of this, highly muscular individuals will throw the scale off.

Is BMI Calculation the Same for Children and Teens?

No, children and teens have a sex and age dependent calculation they should use. Body fat is different for boy versus girls, and body fat changes with age.

Why Obesity and Overweight Individuals Matter?

People in the range of overweight and obesity are at a higher risk of getting the following diseases and conditions:

  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Osteoarthrities
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Endometrial, Breast and Colon Cancers.

Is Bariatric Surgery a Cure to Obesity?

Bariatric Surgery is not a cure for obesity. Weight loss surgery is the last resort option for patients who are obese and need to lose weight. Weight loss surgery is a tool which can help you manage your weight and get you in a weight range that is healthy. Weight loss surgery has also been shown to reduce symptoms and even reverse co-morbidites including type 2 diabetes.

Not all Weight Loss Surgery is Equal

Not all weight loss surgery is created equal, recently 33% of Lap-Band surgery patients had revision weight loss surgery. More and more, patients are opting for gastric sleeve surgery – on the advice of bariatric surgeons. Gastric sleeve is a surgery which provides comparable expected weight loss similar to gastric bypass, and has been shown to have less complications than gastric banding (Lap-Band system).
